BLUE-GRAY CLASSIC
The Third Annual
Blue-Gray Classic
9/8/2007
Blue-Gray points: BGC History : 2005 was the inaugural BGC. Six teams played on two fields at Gravelly Point Park. Blue carried the day, but Virginia Tech was the top team in the points table. 2006 saw the BGC arrive at Signal Hill with 10 teams. The Gray reversed history, though Catholic was the top team. NOVA RFC : The BGC is presented by the Northern Virginia Rugby Football Club. The club was established in 1976 and is now made up of six teams: men, women, old boys, u23s and two u19 clubs. In the 15s game the NOVA men, in addition to many tournament championships, have claimed one MARFU championship and two trips to the National Sweet 16 in the last decade. In 7s NOVA won the national championship in 1996 and finished 5 th in the nation this year. Our women’s team is currently one of the best in the nation. Check out www.novarugby.com for more information. The NOVA u23 program is a summer u23 15s program geared toward college players. If you will be in the Northern Virginia area next summer, email Murph at novarugby@braemarnet.com for details. Signal Hill Park : Signal Hill is a historic Civil War site. The hill beyond the basketball court was in Confederate hands at the First Battle of Manassas. Using an observation tower and signal flags, the Confederates observed and reported Union troop movements. This information was critical to the Confederate victory and the process revolutionized battlefield communication. The Signal Hill Monument is located just to the right and across the street from the main entrance of the park. Park rules : Park only in legal spaces (no grass.) Please deposit all trash in the trash cans. Alcohol is prohibited in the park.
